About Chinese Cresteds
There are two type of chinese cresteds: Hairless and powderpuff.
The hairless type only has hair on the head (crest), feet (socks) and tail (plume) also known collectively as furnishings. In the hairless catagory there is hairy hairless, medium hairless and true hairless. The hairy hairless may be so hairy it could be mistaken for a powderpuff. The difference is it doesn't have an undercoat like a puff. Hairy hairless and medium hairless have a lot of hair on their bodies and faces and very full furnishings. They both need to be shaved (usually weekly or more often) to achieve the appearance of the show dogs. True hairless have very little or no body hair and usually lighter furnishings. The hairless variety need a lot of skin care to keep them looking healthy. When they go through the adolescent stage their skin breaks out like a normal teenager. Extra attention needs to be given to the skin during this time.
The powderpuff has a long full coat. The face and ears are usually shaved to give them a clean appearance. They also take a lot of care and grooming. Puffs need to be brushed daily to prevent matting. They can also be given a "pony cut" which gives them the look of a hairless. The pony cut is good for warm weather to keep them cooler.
